The 12,000 square foot historical building that faces the courthouse on the square in Georgetown, had been remodeled so many times that much of the effort for this project was dedicated to restorative efforts. Historically the property was two adjoined buildings. On the corner is the late 19th century Steele mercantile building. To the south is the early 20th century Makemson Hotel. Together the footprint forms an “L” with space open to the alley previously used as stables. Because the Texas Historical Commission is concerned primarily with exterior compliance, we were able to capture the stables for air-conditioned space with a steel and masonry structure, utilizing old walls from the stables.
